Water companies are charging millions of customers for for a service they don't receive says SmartSource Water in The Sunday Times (subscription required).
SmartSource Water revealed that it would be relatively easy for the water companies to reduce bills for a large number of customers who live in areas where rain water doesn't drain into water company sewers. However, the regional water companies insist that each customer must approach them in order to ask for the rebate.
Under the current guidance from OFWAT, water companies are guaranteed their income regardless of what individual customers pay and feel little pressure to make sure individual customers are charged correctly.
